I actually remember reading it in 89 on a balcony in Germany and I thought it was simply brilliant. I'd never read scientific books before and shortly after that I found Stephen Jay Gould.

I still remember laughing insanely over the praying mantis bit, the image it evoked was priceless, do you remember it?
